I have tried your the solution posted above by the letter
and it doesn't seem to work for me. the Geohot background
image doesn't appear and i am stuck with connect to itunes.
i am running it on windows vista 32 bit.

is there anything
else I should do for vista, cause everybody that succeeds
seem to have XP
Anonymous 2009-10-31 14:41:39

I know a little on computers but not a hole lot how do u
actually move blackra1n.exe to the C:/ drive
Anonymous 2010-01-10 17:04:08

hi that happened to me too let the ipod run out of battery
and then when you plug it in its like nothing ever happened
Anonymous 2010-03-23 15:58:38

dude i have window 7 and it worked
zexco 2009-10-20 19:21:46

after recovery mode it goes to a quick white screen and
after that the apple logo, and blackra1n says it finished
jailbreaking... yet when it boots up there's no new
springboard apps =/

(done this 3 times in total, in between
the times that don't work whilst attempting) -.-
admin 2009-10-14 10:48:33

you guys need to make sure to follow the steps exactly, especially the button hold/release sequence/timing as this
IS KEY.
Mine didn't work and was doing the same as you guys
until I did the exact sequence of holding both buttons, then
releasing the powerbutton when the apple logo appeared while
still holding the home button, then releasing the home
button after the GeoHot background appears.
If you do the exact steps, in order listed above, you should have no problem.
Anonymous 2009-10-24 20:32:46

Hold both the power and home button at the same, exact,
time. That's how it finally worked for me. Took 5 times, but
doing this finally allowed it to work. Yeah!
3G Prob..
mister3aboud 2009-10-14 10:46:39

I can't get it right, I've done your steps times and times
and it still won't work. =S

I get the Connect To iTunes
thing, and it won't go away! =S

Please reply comment or
email if possible!
mister3aboud@hotmail.com
admin 2009-10-14 10:53:52

@mister3aboud are you holding the 'home button' from the
time you power on the phone? you have to hold the 'home
button' until the itunes/usb screen goes away..

Make sure
you are holding both buttons, only let go of the power
button after you see the apple screen (continue to hold the
home button), after the apple screen, my 3g flashed the
itunes/usb screen for like a second and then went
immediately to the GeoHot screen and then rebooted,
jailbroken.
mister3aboud 2009-10-14 11:06:11

Mine stays more than a minute, then I give up and leave
it!!

I'll tell you exactly what I did.

First I plug my
V3.1.2 iPhone 16GB 3G into the computer. Then I turn it off.
Then I 'make it ra1n' and press sleep button and then
immediately home button. And I wait for about 10 seconds
till I get the Apple logo, then I let go of the sleep button
immediately as soon as I see it, holding the home button.
And it says on the pc: entering recovery..

Then it shows
the iTunes logo and the USB connector and it says:
running..

It doesn't go away. It doesn't change at all.
=S

Any tips or mistakes I'm doing?
fiddleydo 2010-03-06 04:40:07

you let go of the home button when it says running
mister3aboud 2009-10-14 11:08:19

No wait, sorry. It doesn't say: entering recovery..

It
goes directly to Running a second after the computer makes a
sound that a device has been connected (Windows XP) and a
few seconds after the iTunes logo show up. And stays that
way.
Got it After MANY Tries - Vista
Tmcdon05 2009-10-17 20:52:53

I tried probably 8 times before it worked. The only notes I
can impart - I followed the instructions above, when I held
down the sleep & home buttons, I pressed the sleep button
then pressed the home button with the blink of an eye.
Slower or at the same time didn't work. If the GeoHot image
comes up, be patient - it is working. Just posting to let
everybody know that it does indeed work with Vista. I know
that was a question being pondered. Just to be safe,
however, I did run Blackra1n with Admin status.
admin 2009-10-20 08:29:25

@mister3aboud don't worry about what the computer says onscreen, just
make sure to Hold the Power Button and immediately after,
also hold the Home Button, then let go of the Power Button
and hold the Home Button until the GeoHot background comes
on and go from there..

@Tmcdon05 what did you think step 8 meant? "Hold the Power Button
and immediately after, also hold the Home Button" lol
This is why I said make sure you follow the directions exactly and it will work. Glad you are up and going =)
I Know EXACTLY what it meant
Tmcdon05 2009-10-27 21:05:41

I knew exactly what step 8 meant - what I meant was that
after 50 times, the time it finally worked was when I
pressed both buttons practically at the same time, not a
second apart, not a half a second apart, but as close to at
the same time as possible. I followed the directions EXACTLY
as stated MANY times and like all the other people, it took
MANY times before it worked. FYI - I am now in the process
of trying a second phone and no matter how I do it, it still
hasn't worked. I have tried it probably 20 times and am
still going. In other words, the directions are correct, but
for whatever reason, they just don't work all the time, as
evidenced by all the other people who can't make it work.
Rykki 2009-10-20 08:21:28

I really want to do this but I am useless with computers can
u plz explain wot u mean by kill in section 6?
admin 2009-10-20 08:55:52

@Rykki here are the directions copied and pasted from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323527

You can use Task Manager to start programs, to start or to
end processes, and to view a dynamic display of your
computer's performance.
How to start Task Manager
To start Task Manager, take any of the following actions:

* Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, and then click Task Manager.

* Press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC.
* Right-click an empty area of
the taskbar, and then click Task Manager.

How to end a process
The Processes tab displays information about the processes that are
running on the computer. A process can be an application
that you start or subsystems and services that are managed
by the operating system. To end a process, follow these
steps.

Note Proceed with caution when you end a process. If you exit a
program in this manner, data that has not been saved will be
lost. If you end a system process, a system component may no
longer function correctly. To match a process with a running
program, right-click the program name on the Applications tab of Windows Task Manager, and then click Go To Process.

1. Click the Processes tab.
2. Do one of the following, depending on the action
that you want to perform:
* If you want to end a
single process, click the process that you want to end, and
then click End Process.
* If you want to end a process and all processes
directly or indirectly related to it, right-click the
process that you want to end, and then click End Process Tree.

I follow all the steps and I see the screen with the guy and
iphones flying around him. But only for a split second then
it disappears followed quickly by a white screen flash then
it goes back to the apple logo and proceeds to boot normally
without any jailbreaking being done.

lilbrandon 2009-10-21 13:10:28

i tried doing exactly as you said. perfect timing and
everything. and it still didnt work. need help
not working...
rafael 2009-10-21 20:52:58

as many people said, the exact steps you said are not
working for some of us, probably country / carrier related
more than OS. but yep, doesnt work for most of ppl, stuck at
running and connect to itunes screen on phone. sad
DOES work, be patient
brycetron 2009-10-24 06:10:16

I tried it 10+ plus times before it worked. It worked after
I shut down almost all apps (including Chrome), copied the
.exe to C:, AND HELD THE POWER BUTTON A SPLIT SECOND BEFORE
PRESSING HOME. Most likely some app was checking the USB
bus, or interfering in some other way.

Just try different
timing, and barebones OS. Really, once I followed the steps
VERBATIM is when it seemed to work (after killing all
non-essential apps).

Blackra1n = random
Successful 2009-10-23 03:38:04

Right guys - there are lots of supposed 'guides' out there
telling you how to do it...forget them. Blackra1n is random
- most times it fails, but occasionally it will work. I
repeated the EXACT same method about 15 times, until it
worked. I did nothing different whatsoever - same timing,
same everything. I ran Blackra1n, it got stuck. I closed
Blackra1n, reopened it, pressed 'make it rain' then rebooted
iphone, over, and over and over again. 15 times of doing
the same crap again and again, and it worked.

If you are
lucky enough to succeed first time you try,
congratulations...but for me, it was all about trying,
swearing my ass off, trying the same shit again, swearing
some more, etc...

It doesn't make sense...but those are the
facts. What I would suggest is (assuming you are patient
enough with this buggy program), try someone's guide 15
times. If it doesn't work, try someone else's guide 15
times...etc. Eventually you will either succeed or end up
downgrading, or waiting for a better jailbreak release (or
throwing your iphone out the window)

P.S. Using iPhone 3G
16 GB, Windows 7 32-bit
it worked!
mathijs 2009-10-23 04:15:45

Tnx, it worked on my Itouch 2G (OS 3.1.2) on a windows 7 64
bit.
It was hard to stop the services, cause i get acces
deniend. :D
If someone has the same problem, do this:
Go
to run, and type msconfig, go to services, and dissable al
the services you have to stop, than restart the
machine.

Mathijs
If at first you don't succeed...
SdJ 2009-10-23 19:01:18

3G 3.1.2
Windows XP

I tried and tried and tried and tried
again over and over and over again it couldn't get it to get
past the connect USB to iTunes. Screen. I rebooted over and
over again until it finally worked.

It's a pain in the ass
but keep at it and it'll work. Still seems a bit buggy on
the iPhone 3G but finally worked so I can't complain.

Best
of luck.
Anonymous 2009-10-23 20:44:54

anon 2009-10-24 05:25:19

All the people that it doesn't work for, keep holding home

disappears and you see GeoHot.

Thanks mate, and good luck
to the others.

Bob 2009-10-24 16:53:16

Worked for me - I was pulling my hair out but the timing and
the like that I followed above seemed to do the trick.
Unlocked, downloading Cydia and now playing about on
it.

Thanks.
ddff 2009-10-25 08:27:08

I can agree with those who said Blackra1n is random
application. I had to repeat running the programm and
holding buttons same way for 8 times till it worked. So
basically the instruction above is correct. Took about 10
minutes and 2 cans of beer :)

I tried it since a week.

THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH for this information!!!
I've tried numerous sites for info on how this program
works with no success until I found yours! Your instructions
are dead on!

The one thing I might recommend is that (in step 9) instead of waiting until you see the apple logo, hold POWER and HOME for 8 sec and then release POWER while still holding HOME (you
will see the apple logo for a few sec before releasing
power).
You will then see the Apple USB screen for about 2
sec before the Blackra1n image shows up and before you know
it you're jailbroken!

Again thank you for your help!
Without it I may still be pulling my hair out!
maybe this will help...
Pat 2009-10-29 22:08:05

Ok, so I kept following all the steps and it kepts showing
me the itunes screen and it wouldn't go away, and I knew
this has to work because it did a week ago on 3 phones.
Since, when you hold the buttons one right after the other,
the apple sign shows up, then itunes logo flashes for a
second, then the phone restarts and shows the apple logo
again and then the itunes again and it doesn't go away, I
figured maybe I'll keep holding the power button after the
second apple logo and itunes, and guess what...it worked.
Before I knew it, I saw the guy with the curly hair with
iphones flying all around him. Try that, maybe it will work
for you too. Good luck! Don't give up :s

gablad 2009-11-13 07:15:39

there is one thing i don't get... once it's all done, you

no way to add my music/photos/apps etc...

something here?! cuz everything worked fine (after 4 or 5

The only downside to this jailbreak is that you can't really
turn off your iphone/ipodtouch, cus then u have to jailbreak
it again, I know u can put it on standby but that kinda
sucks if u want to turn it off and turn it back you gotta
plug it back to the computer and run blackra1n again..

on the ipod with out the ipod getting bricked and if so will
itunes sync normally afterwards
admin 2010-01-07 16:47:00

you should be fine as long as you follow my steps exactly.
if you don't, the jailbreak, just wont work, but your ipod
should be fine. I have not had any issues on ipods or
iphones which I have done the jailbreak.

Yay, I got it first go. Except it wants me to connect to
iTunes every time I boot it up. Which is kind of annoying.
But it works again after. I guess I shouldn't turn off my
device. :l

does this work with 3gs also????
3GS 3.1.2 firmware - i want to jailbreak!
Brandon 2010-04-02 11:56:06

Ok, calling all fellow 3gs 3.1.2 owners who have jailbreak
with Blackrain...
Do i need to install a different version
of Itunes (older than then the new 9.1, which i heard
doesn't work)?
Also-will this tutorial work for the
3GS???
Any insight would be great. I really want to
jailbreak my iphone, but also don't want to f it up.
Wont boot up
Annoyed 2010-04-12 08:21:32

So I've had the jailbreak on my phone for awhile. Just
recently decided that I was going to uninstall it since OS
4.0 was coming out. So I decided first I would uninstall a
few things including winter board and all the themes I had
with it. Well it removed everything and then told me to
restart.

Well, I've restarted my phone before and had
realized I needed to use the blackra1n again to get it
booted back up. However this time it didn't work. I double
checked and made sure all the processes had been terminated.
I went through your steps probably 6 - 8 times now. Every
time I get the logo on the screen and then it goes blank. I
reboot the phone I get the same screen telling me to plugin
to Itunes and I keep holding the button as mentioned and the
blackra1n logo comes up and then does the reboot all over
again, but it doesn't fully bring my phone back up...

what
am I missing?
admin 2010-04-12 08:23:43

if you are going to 'uninstall' a jailbreak, you can't just
delete jailbroken features.
You need to do a full restore
from itunes which will restore your original firmware (or
the newest version available) thus overwriting the jailbreak
and 'un-jailbreaking' your phone.. make sure to backup your
phone first as this will wipe your data.
